Nurture Your Mental Wellbeing During IVF Mindfully

Trying to conceive when it’s just not happening can be emotionally draining and going through IVF is no walk in the park. It’s an emotional rollercoaster filled with hope, anxiety, and everything in between. But here’s some uplifting news: a recent study shows that practicing mindful self-compassion (MSC) can make a world of difference in your journey.

What this New Study Found

Researchers conducted a two-arm double-blind parallel randomized controlled trial to see how MSC impacts women undergoing IVF. Here are the highlights:

  • Less Hopelessness: Women who practiced MSC reported significantly less hopelessness compared to those who didn’t.

  • Reduced Anger and Hostility: MSC helped in lowering feelings of anger and hostility.

  • Lower Anxiety: Participants experienced a noticeable drop in anxiety levels.

  • Improved Interpersonal Sensitivity: MSC made it easier to manage sensitivity in social interactions.

  • Decreased Depression: There was a significant reduction in depressive symptoms.

(What do all of these highlights have in common? Reduced stress hormones flooding your body keeping it in a fight/flight state which doesn’t support reproduction). Mindful Self Compassion helps you to recognize when habits of thought are adding to your stress instead of soothing stress).

How Mindful Self Compassion Works

MSC combines mindfulness and self-compassion to help you be kinder to yourself, especially during tough times. By attending MSC sessions, women learned to treat themselves with the same compassion they would offer a friend. This practice not only improved their mental wellbeing but also enhanced their overall life satisfaction. (You can start practicing mindful self compassion with the FertileMind app).

Why This Matters for You

IVF can be a taxing process, both physically and emotionally. Incorporating MSC into your routine can provide much-needed emotional support, helping you navigate the ups and downs with greater ease and resilience. Plus, it’s a non-pharmacological, safe, and effective way to boost your mental health. (When you are struggling with morning sickness and the other ‘joys’ of pregnancy - MSC is such a nurturing tool).
